Motor scooters have been largely embraced by many countries outside of the United States. They have been a staple of transportation all over Asia and Europe since the end of World War II. Within these regions, scooters can be seen everywhere, and in some places are the main form transportation. However, while there have been pockets of mainstream scooter use in America, it has only been within the last few years that they have become popular in this country.

The typical gas scooter has an engine that ranges in size from about 50-250cc. The smaller 50 cc scooters are ideal for urban commuting due to their extremely good gas mileage and ease of parking. A larger 250 cc scooter offers a great deal more power and is more aptly suited for longer rides. Most gas scooters can reach fuel efficiency as high as 90mpg, with some fuel injected models going as high as 120mpg.

Not every scooter is a gas scooter. Recent advancements in battery technology have made the electric scooter a much more viable idea. These vehicles are the most ecologically friendly scooters in existence. They produce no emissions whatsoever, and require only a normal electrical outlet for recharging. However, they don’t always have a great range per charge, with the best models only capable of going 50 miles or so.

Small scooters / mopeds have been regaining a lot of popularity in recent years. Often referred to as a “mini scooter”, these are normally driven by an engine that is smaller than 50cc. While they have a much lower speed capacity (usually less than 30mph) they can be perfect for someone that just needs to take short trips around town. Many younger riders have taken to using performance upgrades to enhance the capabilities of these small scoots.

Most scooter owners will need to purchase replacement scooter parts at some point. In most cases these parts are relatively inexpensive and can be easily installed with a few simple tools. However, there are times when installing scooter parts might require the help of a professional scooter mechanic. Most local scooter shops offer mechanic services for just such an occasion. Be sure to call around before taking your scooter in though, as it is important to make sure that the mechanic be familiar with the particular make and model of your scooter.
